Seminar II: New Media

Overall: I wasn't insanely impressed with the work presented, even though I dearly loved Markus Schinwald's "Bob", and Andrea Fraser's "Little Frank and His Carp". I like last year's exhibit, the Supervision one. That one was REALLY nice. And I almost felt like there was much much less artwork being shown this time. I thought that the idea that 'all the world's a stage' could have been more carnival-like, and a few pieces really didn't connect to the overarching theme or individual themes even WITHIN the pieces, such as Mario Ybarra's "Sweeney Tate". Sure, it's a barber shop. Ok. I dig it. But relating it to Sweeney Todd doesn't make me feel comfy or love the barbershop. It makes me AFRAID of the barbershop. I know he was trying to connect the Tate museum with the piece, and was also attempting to connect the piece to the theater by using Sweeney, because it was originally a play, but that's just text. Kira Maintanis Seminar 2: New Media A Whole New Mind &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp David Pink's novel A Whole New Mind is an elongated analysis full of pop culture references and vague facts which discusses why right brainers will rule the world. It's first half attempts to draw the reader in and convince them that having a creative right brain, with a good amount of logical leftness, will herald all mankind into a new movement of higher thought. Pink then continues onto establish the superiority of right brained thinkers everywhere while still using the 'left brainers WERE good, but now..." buffer in all of his arguments. The second section of Pink's A Whole New Mind talks mainly about what makes up your right brain and how to go about activating it in order to reach a higher mental plane. While all of this is fine and good, Pink is writing for people who generally are not artistic, and thusly, this book falls short of many mainly right-brained...

CHECKLIST Redid, reworked, revamped the film. Here's version two of the first shoot. Rent out a camera next week and incorporate "looking at" shots, and also film bag girl standing farther away so I can have two of them. Have yet to overlay in photoshop so there'd be a few bag girl jumpers, was too complicated then. Now with 1 vs 1 film done, can incorporate more. Possibly have them in random areas, like the kitchen, and outside and such, so as to symbolize the fact that competing with yourself at such high standards affects ALL areas of life, universally.

Compile in movie maker. Host a list of inspirations/influences. I plan on filming both girl 1 and bag girls tomorrow. Compiling can be done wednesday night, or possibly later on in the week. Let's see how it goes. The audio file for the jump rope noise sounds simply awesome. Stole the humming from Perfect Blue -- can't help self, it's such a good film.

I found out that I won't have a lot of time these next few weeks, so I'm chipping away at assignments to get them out of the way. Meaning I recognize the importance of this chapter, but do not respond well to it. It is as though Pink is trying to tie together all his previous chapters by briefly mentioning them and then throwing them into a bag with 'spirituality', the 'meaning of life', and 'happiness'. This doesn't just relate to right brained thinkers, and he doesn't really seem to mention much about the brain sides in this chapter (I could be wrong, I'm quite tired). It feels like a short and sloppy conclusion to a really long essay. Honestly, if we took this entire book, and cut out all the nonsense, it would have been a really well written essay. I feel like this little book has been written for those who aren't creative and don't know much about the world and the way to go about writing something like this. This should've...
