Project Review - Tricia Richardson

Tricia Richardson Tricia's movie was wrought with nostalgia, obsession, and collection. I loved the way she used the hands to tell a 'memory' story about item collection, nostalgia, memory, and relationships. The lighting was great, the motions were lovely, and the pacing was appropriate and sweet. The song was great. I didn't mind the bittersweet lyrics, they added to the movie overall, giving it more of a sweet, slightly sad, mood. Pro's: simple, pleasing to the eyes well paced good music appropriate mood playful nostalgic Con's: ending credits too drawn out song lyrics a little too bitter, but still fit. transition from hands to fake hand people a little jarring.

Website Review - Marissa Poole

Marissa Poole I was pleasantly surprised with how lovely Marissa's site is. I think I'm going to employ a similar type of layout for my own personal site. I hope she doesn't mind. :) The conception is clean and clear, and visually pleasing. Where her site is clean and professional, mine is punky and avante garde. I love how she has all her work just there. Right there to view. I need to stop thinking like a webdesigner and more like an artist. She uses space so amazingly well. The white site appears like a blank white canvas wherein her work is displayed so well. Pro's: clean, simple easy to update easy on the eyes modern looking good sense of space professional Con's: name isn't anywhere margins distract. add leftmargin=0 rightmargin=0 topmargin=0 bottommargin=0 to the body tag. the name of the site should just be your name. not 'revolution' not good for small monitors. will break the code. break code = ugly broken site the css/html markup isn't val...

Seminar 2 Update 5

PROGRESS Reworked revamped the second version of the film. Upped the contrast, changed the colors. Bad news: The original batch of files was deleted due to some unknown reason. Or. Well. I can't find it. So the video is of medium quality at best. Trying to remedy this as much as possible, but it's out of my hands, now. Things to Do: Nothing. I did everything that was suggested during the crit EXCEPT FOR THE SPLIT FRAMES. I added it in just to see, and it really looked incredibly cheesy, even though I spent such a long time trying to get it to look professional. I just changed the contrast, extended a few scenes, and just generally changed it around. Little tweaks. Here are both versions, side by side. I'm sorry, that split frame pushing thing was really really really lame looking, even though that's what I wanted at first.. Also, extreme lightening of these files = bad fragments. So. Blah. It did what I wanted it to do, so that's all that matters. Now I just need to...

All the World's a Stage

Overall: I wasn't insanely impressed with the work presented, even though I dearly loved Markus Schinwald's "Bob", and Andrea Fraser's "Little Frank and His Carp". I like last year's exhibit, the Supervision one. That one was REALLY nice. And I almost felt like there was much much less artwork being shown this time. I thought that the idea that 'all the world's a stage' could have been more carnival-like, and a few pieces really didn't connect to the overarching theme or individual themes even WITHIN the pieces, such as Mario Ybarra's "Sweeney Tate". Sure, it's a barber shop. Ok. I dig it. But relating it to Sweeney Todd doesn't make me feel comfy or love the barbershop. It makes me AFRAID of the barbershop. I know he was trying to connect the Tate museum with the piece, and was also attempting to connect the piece to the theater by using Sweeney, because it was originally a play, but that's just text. I cou...

Pink Review

Kira Maintanis Seminar 2: New Media A Whole New Mind &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp David Pink's novel A Whole New Mind is an elongated analysis full of pop culture references and vague facts which discusses why right brainers will rule the world. It's first half attempts to draw the reader in and convince them that having a creative right brain, with a good amount of logical leftness, will herald all mankind into a new movement of higher thought. Pink then continues onto establish the superiority of right brained thinkers everywhere while still using the 'left brainers WERE good, but now..." buffer in all of his arguments. The second section of Pink's A Whole New Mind talks mainly about what makes up your right brain and how to go about activating it in order to reach a higher mental plane. While all of this is fine and good, Pink is writing for people who generally are not artistic, and thusly, this book falls short of many mainly right-brained...

Sem2 Final Post 3

CHECKLIST Redid, reworked, revamped the film. Here's version two of the first shoot. Materials to get: Things to Do: Compile a list of songs in case jump rope noise = not good enough Host a list of inspirations/influences. Rent out a camera next week and incorporate "looking at" shots, and also film bag girl standing farther away so I can have two of them. Have yet to overlay in photoshop so there'd be a few bag girl jumpers, was too complicated then. Now with 1 vs 1 film done, can incorporate more. Possibly have them in random areas, like the kitchen, and outside and such, so as to symbolize the fact that competing with yourself at such high standards affects ALL areas of life, universally.

Sem2 Final Progress 2

CHECKLIST FIRST VERSION HAS BEEN COMPLETED. I SPENT ALL DAY SHOOTING AND EDITING THIS BABY. AND I REALLY LIKE IT. A LOT. IT ENTIRELY DID WHAT I WANTED IT TO DO. -hugs movie- Materials to get: none. All set. Things to Do: Compile a list of songs in case jump rope noise = not good enough Host a list of inspirations/influences.

Sem2Final Progress Post

CHECKLIST Italics Means I got it! Materials to get: Jump Rope (just received) Rainboots/Dotted Rainboots/Red Paisley Dress Floral Skirt/Random Shirt Paper Bag Digital Camera (only need when filming begins) Place to film (massart gym or B-line Chiswick Playground). Tripod. Things to Do: Order the supplies I don't have. Set up a site for the animation. Compile a list of songs in case jump rope noise = not good enough Record jump rope noises. Take pictures. Compile in movie maker. Host a list of inspirations/influences. I plan on filming both girl 1 and bag girls tomorrow. Compiling can be done wednesday night, or possibly later on in the week. Let's see how it goes. The audio file for the jump rope noise sounds simply awesome. Stole the humming from Perfect Blue -- can't help self, it's such a good film.

CHP 9 Response

I found out that I won't have a lot of time these next few weeks, so I'm chipping away at assignments to get them out of the way. Meaning I recognize the importance of this chapter, but do not respond well to it. It is as though Pink is trying to tie together all his previous chapters by briefly mentioning them and then throwing them into a bag with 'spirituality', the 'meaning of life', and 'happiness'. This doesn't just relate to right brained thinkers, and he doesn't really seem to mention much about the brain sides in this chapter (I could be wrong, I'm quite tired). It feels like a short and sloppy conclusion to a really long essay. Honestly, if we took this entire book, and cut out all the nonsense, it would have been a really well written essay. I feel like this little book has been written for those who aren't creative and don't know much about the world and the way to go about writing something like this. This should've...

CHP 8

I'm always trying to get ahead of schedule. PLAY Work and play are connected together, and we cannot divide the two. I tend to divide them, and it makes me miserable. My art has begun to become work, and not play, and I rarely have fun with it anymore. I have only just been getting back to the fun of it all, to playing with it. Because I realized, finally, that I possess a great and vast set of skills, and I can just have fun with them for now, instead of worrying so much. As someone who believes in the idea that a positive attitude is contagious, it hit just the right chords. I go to my new doctor because she is cheerful and nice, and laughs a lot. If she didn't make me feel comfortable and wasn't sociable, I wouldn't go to her, because going to the doctors is scary enough. I go to my dentist because he's a nice fellow, does a great job, and is easy to talk to. Having a man drill holes in your teeth feels a lot less frightening when he's talking to you about fu...

Moyra Davey

(You knew everyone would pick her work as it's the most extensive and coherent) What I liked/Disliked: I enjoyed the fact that the 50 minute film had a backbone to it. What I mean when I say this is that most conceptual artists fall flat for me. It's all about the random idea they came up with and they tend not to execute it to the best of their ability. This film had a concreteness to it. It had a clear message, with small little vignettes spurring off of it. It was constructed more like a diary-esque novel than it was a from the mouth telling. At first, I didn't like it much, but then when I saw some of her photos, and began to pick up on Moyra's own quirkiness, I enjoyed it. I saw the repetition, I saw her obsessive nature (yet she detested that scheduled behavior in her psychoanalyst), I saw the multiples, and I realized that it's all connected and works as a cohesive body. I loved the way she showed how time passed within her Long Life Cool White exhibit. The ...

CHP 7 Response

I enjoyed this chapter overall, as I agree that people need to empathize with others more. I may swear like a sailor, but I still try to include other people and be 'emotionally intelligent'. It's important, really. Not because it will help me get ahead, but because common courtesy and respect make the world a better place. Doing something nice, even just smiling at someone, will brighten up their day. And they might smile at someone else, so that makes the world a better place. Wow I feel like a giant hippie. :) I feel almost as though this book wants to stroke my ego too much. I'm a woman, and because of this, I generally empathize more than the males that I know, simply because of my gender. I'm an artist (or at least I'm trying to be), so I am generally more right-brained than I am left brained (but I like to think I have a happy balance).... so...Pink just keeps trying to stroke my ego. Stroke the ego of all the people who empathize and use their right brai...

Chapter 6

Symphony I adored this chapter, simply put. This is my favorite, I think, out of all of them. This is where I got the idea for the metaphor list. I think symbols are vital in art making, and metaphors are symbol creators. One thing standing for another. I loved his description of his portrait progression. I use symbols in all my drawings that aren't for school. I tend to want to draw what I think it should be, not what they are. When I'm not observing some one or some thing while I draw, I create a stylized, idealized version of it. I have to work on firming up my realistic drawing skills, even if it bores the ever loving crap out of me. This chapter was just...great. Great. Simply great. I even made a metaphor (sortof) list with the help of some friends! All the world's a stage. The apple of my eye. I don't feel rooted. Women are the devil. Men are assholes religion is a disease wearing your heart on your sleeve painful truths thoughts in chaos You are what you eat On ...

Meredith & Gina: Sam Easterson (review)

SAM EASTERSON Did the presentation hold your attention?: Yes very much so. I loved the videos so insanely much. The site was simple, the presenters talked clearly, and it was quick and painless. I would have liked the site to be more visually invested, but I don't think I can really say something like that (I'm way too deep into the web design world). I also really liked our discussion at the end of the presentation. If you can't question the work and explore it's validity, then it isn't really deep enough to be considered art. If you can't have an inner and outer dialog about the piece, be it conceptual, visual, symbolic, etc, then...what are you looking at? Do you have a clear understanding of the artist’s work from the presentation?: Yes. He shows the point of view of various animals. He shows them almost like he's doing a character study on a person. I adore his work. As Meredith said "It's conservation work, but also artwork. His purpo...

Chapter 5 - Story

Again, I read ahead. I want to get most of it done so that I don't lose sleep and get weak. I'm still pretty sick, so I have to take it easy. I really enjoyed this chapter. I think that this is really where the book picks up. Stories are insanely important when it comes to art. Pieces of artwork are their own little stories--their own little narratives in themselves. It's true what he said about paying attention to the narrative more than the facts. I entirely paid more attention to that little story! And when we retell things, we normally have to put them into context and give a story. I always have to explain myself this way, or I confuse myself and the person I'm explaining whatever I'm saying to. It was a short and concise chapter, and I didn't feel that there was any unnecessary tongue waggling. He was pretty dead on with his ideas, in my honest opinion. THIS END PART IS WAY BETTER, GUYS.

Chapter Four

I read ahead early so that I won't be bogged down with other work during the week. I both liked and disliked this chapter. I do not believe that the future of the western world, basically, rests in the hands of graphic designers and illustrators alike. The entire designing market is saturated heavily. People are moving away from the cubical jobs and stay at home mom duties...this may be partly due to the things Pink outlined in Chapter Three (Abundance, Automation, and Asia), so he does make some valid points. However. This is a big however, mind you. This doesn't just go for America. This goes for the entire world. Everyone wants to design video game characters, now. Everyone wants to be a graphic artist. Everyone wants to paint digital paintings. This might be the way of the future, but it's already entirely clogged and almost completely realized. I am disliking the way this book flows more and more...and am finding myself at odds with Pink. I feel like I'm reading a ...
